Alfen delivered its 1 MW battery energy storage system “TheBattery” to Engie’s power generation plant in Drogenbos (Brussels). This is the first battery based storage system in Belgium to provide grid stability since the grid operator opened its network for battery systems in May this year.

What does Alfen do?

Alfen will manage design, supply, civil works, installation, tests and long-term maintenance. Once operational, Centrica Energy Trading will employ a multimarket optimisation strategy to allow energy to be stored, then sold and deployed to the grid when supply outweighs demand or when there is a need for additional power on the grid.

When will Alfen & Centrica Energy Trading start work?

Work on the project will start later in 2023. Alfen will act as the turnkey supplier, managing the design, supply, civil works, installation, tests and long-term maintenance of the storage project. Centrica Energy Trading will use a multimarket optimisation strategy to enable energy storage and sale to the grid once the facility is operational.

How will a flexible energy storage system help Belgium?

The storage system will participate in Belgium’s capacity market as the country seeks a long-term green power supply and plans to close five of its seven nuclear reactors by 2025. With a flexible energy storage system, renewable energy can be stored at times of abundance and released when there is high demand for it.
