Solar Power is Becoming Increasingly Popular in Poland

Poland is working its way to the top of the European ranks in photovoltaics. In 2020, 2635 megawatts (MW) of solar power output was installed in Poland – more than thrice as much as in 2019 (823MW). This put Poland''s PV market in fourth place in Europe, behind Spain (2,7 GW), the Netherlands (2,8 GW) and Germany (4,8 GW).

Poland: Rush for solar reaches new heights, but obstacles remain

Poland''s installed solar capacity surged to over 17 GW in 2023, making it the fourth-largest solar market in the European Union with over 1.3 million micro solar installations contributing to the energy mix.

SUMMARY

EU countries achieved a 22% increase in PV installed power in comparison to 2021 – almost three times lower than in Poland. In 2022, Poland was ranked again on the second place, after Germany, in terms of increase in the PV installed power in the European Union.

The solar industry in Poland — key facts and numbers

The solar industry in Poland is driven by government incentives, favorable solar conditions, and the country''s commitment to renewable energy. With ongoing efforts to promote solar power, Poland is expected to continue its expansion in the solar industry and contribute to its overall energy transition.

Poland''s installed solar capacity exceeds 17GW

At the close of December 2023, Poland''s cumulative installed solar PV capacity had reached 17,057MW, the largest among all renewable sources. This was followed by wind (9,428MW) and hydro (979MW). Last year, Poland''s new solar additions reached 4.6GW, as calculated by the IEO based on a study published in May 2023.

Solar power in Poland

Solar energy in Poland includes the production of solar thermal energy and solar photovoltaics. By the end of 2021, there were around 3,000,000 square metres (32,000,000 sq ft) of installed solar thermal collectors which in Poland are primarily used for heating up household water. The total solar photovoltaics (PV) grid-connected capacity in Poland was 17,05
